HOW TO ‘GREEN’ YOUR HOME

What do those “stars” mean to your household budget

With the Carbon Tax aimed at driving more Australians to reduce their carbon emissions, a Melbourne company has developed a simple tool to assist people to choose how to maximise their savings on energy bills.

GreenSavingsCalculator.com.au shows you just how much carbon you will save by assessing a wide range of energy saving and “green” devices.

There are comprehensive sections on the energy profile of building materials, landscaping, kitchen, bathroom and garden options.

The Green Savings Calculator allows consumers to plan which sustainable products best fit into their lifestyle and which will save them the most energy and water usage.

It explains the “stars” on electrical appliances or the savings that can be made between an electric fan and reverse cycle air conditioning (among hundreds of options) – and it may be much more than you expect

For those building or renovating, the Green Savings Calculator assists in creating everything from a perfect environmentally friendly home to choosing an energy efficient appliance such as a dishwasher or fridge for the latest kitchen upgrade.

The program has been used to develop an 8.2 star home in the Alamanda community, at Point Cook, which includes 5 star energy rated appliances, suggestions for beneficial house orientation and other environmentally alternatives to the norm.

For instance, awnings have been added to north facing glass. Lowering awnings during summer prevents overheating while raising them in winter allows good solar access when heat from the sun is welcome.

The Green Savings Calculator also found that some of the greenest appliances, which allow savings of up to $917 a year (that’s almost $10,000 over 10 years), pay for themselves very quickly.

Sponsored by Melbourne-based residential property developer Rory Costelloe, and verified by RMIT Centre for Design, the Green Savings Calculator offers an assessment of the savings available for a wide range of products.

“The Green Savings Calculator is designed to be a simple but effective way of minimising your home’s carbon emissions – and how to choose the most cost effective or greenest products – or both.”

Mr Costelloe said: “No home should be designed or built in Australia without reference to this calculator.  There is abundant information tailored to cover every aspect of building, and to address builders’ needs”.

He said with 15,000 homes built every year in Melbourne alone the Green Savings Calculator delivers the benefits and cost savings of “going green” in a simple table.
