COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change is one of the greatest social, economic and environmental challenges of our time, and it has been accepted by Federal Government that human activity is one of the major causes.
This, in turn, is having an impact on Australia's rainfall, temperature, bushfire frequency, health, heritage and biodiversity for current and future generations.
Such information can lead most people to wonder, “What can I do to reduce my carbon footprint?” This has been made easy with the Green Savings Calculator.
The Green Savings Calculator (www.GreenSavingsCalculator.com.au) is perfect for anyone looking to build, renovate or just curious to look at their options on how to be more ‘green’.
It is a simple to use assessment of the savings possible from the most popular eco-friendly building options in the market today including the areas of water, construction materials and energy.
Sponsored by Melbourne-based property developer Rory Costelloe, with the methods and data used verified by RMIT Centre for Design, it offers an assessment of the potential savings available for a range of sustainable products.
“As a community we need to start making a difference, and begin to reduce our impact on the planet,” Mr Costelloe said. “Australians do care about trying to reduce their environmental impact, and now with the Green Savings Calculator that can assess what their contribution will be.”
The Green Savings Calculator has hard data on carbon emissions, water use and savings from using sustainable products. It calculates the savings over 1 year and 10 year timeframes of a typical house. It looks at carbon emissions savings in terms of tonnes per year and also translates this into the iconic ‘black balloons.’
For example, if you are looking at cooling your house, the calculator presents more sustainable ways to achieve this, including the use of ceiling fans or energy efficient systems, and displays the potential savings this will create based on a typical Melbourne home. Users have the choice of looking at a typical new home or an established home to compare their savings.
“The Green Savings Calculator is designed to be a simple but effective way of analyzing your home’s carbon emissions – and where there’s a decision to be made, making the wisest, most environmentally friendly decision,” Mr Costelloe said.
The Green Savings Calculator is free for anyone to use and is available at www.greensavingscalculator.com.au
